Defiant woman faces down EDL protester

A powerful photograph of an Asian woman staring in the face of an English Defence League supporter (EDL) has taken the world by storm.

The image has been shared more than 15,000 times on social media, after it was taken at the EDL’s Birmingham demonstration on Saturday 8 April 2017.  The photograph shows a policeman attempting to restrain the baseball cap wearing demonstrator while the Asian woman identified by media as Saffiyah Khan is seen smiling with her hands casually in her pockets. Khan claims she “was not scared in the slightest.”

Television personality and journalist, Piers Morgan took to Twitter commenting: “Enraged EDL racist stared down by amused, contemptuous Asian woman” and said it was the “photo of the week”.

Khan got involved after 20 to 25 EDL people surrounded a woman in a hijab. She claims “police did nothing” so “I decided to go and try and get her out of there.” Khan added, “I wasn’t in a confrontational role, I wanted to keep a low profile.”
